Autumn Bryant, M.S., M.A., CCC-SLP
Autumn is a practicing Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) from Chicago, Illinois. Autumn holds a Master of Arts in Speech and Hearing Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Science in Health Communication from Northwestern University.
Autumn has presented at the Illinois Speech-Language Hearing Association (ISHA) Conference on Using Google Docs and Forms to Improve Efficiency (handout available in the files section) and holds an ACE Award from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) for continuing education.
In order to target her life's work of making life easier for SLPs and alleviating problems affecting the field, Autumn sells digital resources as Autumn Bryant - Speech-Language Investigator and runs several SLP Facebook Groups and Pages, including Purposeful Rebranding of Speech-Language Pathology (PRSLP), SLPs in Accent Modification, School Contractor SLPs, AKA SLP, Speech-Language Pathologists of Illinois, Expand Your S.C.O.P.E.™, and the Speech-Language Pathologists page (which has over 30,000 followers and is used to amplify strategies and initiatives often conceived in the PRSLP group to help the public better understand our field and scope of practice).
Autumn transitioned from being a School-Based SLP to seeing adult accent modification clients, to working in an outpatient pediatric clinic with patients from 18 months to 18 years, and now to doing accent modification and dialect coaching with international students at a prestigious university.
Through all that she does, Autumn is committed to her mission of helping SLPs feel valued and fulfilled within their careers.
How it works:
Using her talent for technology, Autumn has designed and customized several formulas to aid in matching CCC-SLPs with CCC-SLPs for mentoring and shadowing. These formulas help her pinpoint SLPs with complimentary experiences and goals.
For example, when a user submits a private profile asking to shadow a school-based SLP who has experience with Apraxia in the Columbus Ohio area, Autumn receives an immediate notification. Autumn then goes to work using her computerized formulas to help her narrow down a search and see users with experiences matching those preferences and even look for ones who are in the same or nearby cities.
When a match is found, Autumn contacts both of the CCC-SLPs (the mentor and the mentee) with information on how to contact each other and arrange their shadowing experience or begin their mentoring relationship.
To review, here are the steps:
1) Submit: An SLP submits a private profile (only the name, email address, and/or phone number will be shared with the coordinating SLP and only after being matched. No one else can see the information).
2) Match: Autumn uses her formulas and clinical knowledge to review the profile and find a coordinating SLP.
3) Notify: Autumn sends an email notifying the SLPs that they have been matched along with resources for starting the mentoring or shadowing experience.
4) Contact: The matched SLPs contact each other and begin the peer-mentoring relationship.
5) Improve: Both SLPs become better clinicians from the experience!
Our Mission:
The mission of Expand Your SCOPE is to match certified therapists and diagnosticians with each other for shadowing or mentoring. The intra-disciplinary relationships we establish will provide participants with insights into different settings or populations within their own field through guided peer-to-peer conversations or by observing clinical techniques in real-world contexts.
Expand Your SCOPE members will each fill out a detailed private profile regarding their professional backgrounds. We will then use these profiles to find clinicians whose expertise matches other clinician’s areas of interest. If the clinicians are at a distance from each other, they will be paired for mentoring. However, if the clinicians are within close proximity, they will be paired for in-person shadowing experiences.
Expand Your SCOPE launched with American speech-language pathologists and aims to expand this service to include audiologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, social workers, and other health care providers in the U.S. and abroad.
Expand Your SCOPE strives to give clinicians a window into another segment of their own field, while recognizing the value of these experiences as professional development hours. Expand Your SCOPE places a premium on time. Our objective is to save clinicians’ valuable time and energy by performing for them the rewarding, yet arduous task, of locating and matching professionals with each other for mentoring relationships and shadowing experiences which allow them to scope out an expanded scope of practice.
