Facial Anatomy Review: Contouring & Highlighting Makeup Tutorial

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) must learn the muscles of the face and neck in order to diagnose and treat patients. However, our scope of practice is so vast that different SLPs use this knowledge to varying extents in daily practice. Some SLPs focus on language (how we understand and express our ideas in any modality, including speech, sign language, writing, or symbols). In these cases, the anatomy of the face may not directly impact the therapy process.

Other SLPs focus on speech disorders - how we pronounce words and say them in a smooth voice (in which case, knowing the anatomy of the face and neck is relevant).

Still, other speech-language pathologists focus on swallowing disorders (dysphagia). For this specialty, understanding the anatomy and physiology of the face and neck is crucial. In preparation for broadening my own scope of practice as a Speech-Language Pathologist, I decided to try an anatomy based make-up tutorial and was pleasantly surprised at how it helped me remember the muscles of the face.

If you're studying the facial anatomy as well, I recommend you DO try this at home. Contouring and highlighting based on facial anatomy is a fun and (most importantly) MEMORABLE way to review. Since we learn more when we apply our knowledge, applying makeup by facial muscle can help you store and recall what you're learning! 💋

Members of our Facebook group can download a printable template with instructions for contouring and highlighting based on facial anatomy (see the files section of our group). If you're not in the group, you can still get the template shown at the end of the video by visiting our store at www.expandyourscope.com/store.
