CCC-SLP Shadowing CCC-SLP (Vol. 3): Infant Feeding & Swallowing Clinic

Here are six things I learned by shadowing in a feeding clinic that I didn't get just from reading books:

1. SEATING

There are seating considerations you might not otherwise think of, unless you see them in person or have them explained by a mentor SLP: like a white high chair tray may retain discoloration even when it's clean, so opt for a colored one if possible. A highchair on wheels is great from moving between different feeding rooms. Plastic high chair straps are easier to wipe down. Seats with crevices might get crumbs stuck in them and a removable seat cover makes washing easier.

2. DOCTORS

Some facilities have more in-person access to their doctors than others. Collaboration is so wonderful when professionals can see each other face to face.

3. VISUALS

Having PECS pictures related to feeding is a great feeding room staple.

4. WATCHING

Even children find it awkward to be watched while eating, especially by people they don't know well. In a screening, you can pretend to be paying attention to someone else and then steal quick glances of them.

5. SOUNDS, SMELLS, & VISUALS

Some kids may be acutely aware of sensory inputs. While you can find this in every book, there is nothing like getting those same sensory inputs yourself while interpreting a child's reactions to them.

6. FORMS

Many facilities have their own screening or intake forms that were customized by the staff therapists. You can't find all SLP resources online and going to meet people in person is a great way to see what other SLPs are using so you can customize your own supplies.

These six takeaways highlight the importance of shadowing other SLPs even as a certified SLP yourself. If you need help finding an SLP to shadow or be mentored by, become a member of this site TODAY! The sooner you submit your profile, the better your spot in our queue.
